Arizona Tax Filing Deadline Extended to July 15, 2020
In addition to previous orders loosening eligility requirements to receive unemployment benefits, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey issued an administrative order aimed at providing economic relief to taxpayers affected by the Coronavirus by extending the income tax deadline to July 15, 2020. This deadline will be consistent with US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s announcement that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has moved the deadline for filing and/or paying 2019 federal tax returns to July 15, 2020 for individual, corporate and fiduciary tax returns. The new deadline means taxpayers filing state tax returns or submitting payments after the previous April 15 deadline will not be assessed late payment penalties or interest. What Else is Governor Ducey Doing to Help Arizonans During the COVID19 Epidemic
In his continuing effort to battle the effects of the COVID-19 Coronavirus, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey implemented plans to help prevent the spread of the virus. To ensure Arizonans have access to food during this time of crisis, Governor Ducey is activating the National Guard to assist grocery stores and food banks with re-stocking shelves in the face of heightened demand. Arizona grocery stores are facing unprecedented demand, and this assistance will help ensure the continuation of food supply. Food banks are also struggling with adequate volunteer levels to serve those in need, so now is a good time to donate any extra food or lend a helping hand while exercising social distancing, of course. Governor Ducey also issued an Executive Order that halts all elective surgeries in the state of Arizona to free up medical resources and maintain the capacity for hospitals and providers to continue offering vital services. This will help keep critical personal protective equipment, such as masks, gloves, gauze, medication, needles, IV bags, etc. available for the fight against COVID-19. The Governor also issued rules for restaurants, bars and other businesses to function during this time of crisis. An Executive Order issued requires restaurants in Arizona counties with confirmed COVID-19 cases to provide dine-out options only. However, to assist in mitigating the financial consequences of restaurant closures, the Executive Order also allows restaurants to deliver alcoholic beverages with the purchase of food. Additionally, the Governor’s directive allows manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to buy back unopened products from restaurants, bars and clubs. Unfortunately, the order also required all bars, movie theaters and gyms in those counties to close for the time being. This builds on the previous guidance from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) to ensure one consistent policy across jurisdictions. It is effective close of business Friday, March 20. Finally, in an effort to help seniors and commercial drivers, an Executive Order was issued to delay expiration dates on Arizona driver licenses for residents over the age of 65. The purpose is to avoid having seniors visit MVD offices while the Coronavirus is still a threat. This will protect seniors and vulnerable Arizonans from the spread of the virus. The policy applies to commercial vehicle drivers, which ensures that drivers stay on the road and not in line at MVDs.
